Here’s what we’re seeing and designing – right now!

Open-concept floorplans have long been associated with light, spaciousness, and a more informal way of living. From soaring ceilings to integrated kitchen and living areas, these layouts can make even modest homes feel grand and connected.

But are open concept designs still the best choice for how we live today?

While open plans might feel like a modern concept, they’re actually rooted in early New England homes, where cooking, gathering, and living happened in one large space. The layout was reimagined in the 1950's as kitchens became central to family life, and designated rooms began to fade in favor of more fluid, connected living.

Why Open Floorplans Still Work.

Today’s open layouts continue to support multifunctional living, such as cooking while chatting with guests, supervising homework from the kitchen island, or enjoying informal gatherings without walls getting in the way.

They’re also smart. Fewer interior walls often mean better airflow, more natural light, and reduced building costs. When thoughtfully designed, they can make a smaller home feel significantly larger and more efficient.

What We’ve Learned About Home Design Since COVID.

During the pandemic, many families discovered that not everything works in one shared space. The need for privacy and spaces such as home offices, quiet reading nooks, or homework zones became essential, and that demand hasn’t gone away.

Designing transitional spaces and flexible zones within an open layout is now key to making it livable long-term.
